I’m still on a high from last night. I keep trying to explain it to my husband and he doesn’t quite get it. People think this uproar is about terminating a pregnancy after 5 months. It’s not. It is about the woman’s right to choose. It is also about a woman’s right to be HEARD. It’s about a woman’s right to be acknowledged by her male counterparts in politics.
Watching that last two hours of the Texas Senate was so empowering. Seeing the Democrats all rallying to try and make it til midnight. Hearing the gallery support it’s elected officials for something they believe in. The screams, the chants, the electricity I heard over YouTube last night.
Not cable television. Not CNN, or ABC, or NBC. No, it was Twitter… and in a limited fashion, Facebook, who kept me up watching last night. Watching history.
Best quote of the night? When Lt Gov Dewhurt IGNORED Senator Van de Putte and she said, “At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be heard over her male colleagues in the room?“. YES. That is when the gallery erupted and I clapped in front of my computer and gasped.
Today I donated to Wendy Davis for her courage in standing up for something she believed in and being an amazing example to my daughter, and everyone else. I also donated to Planned Parenthood.
It was such a pleasure to watch last night. Even if we have a lot more work to do.
