And… 25m on my timer… go!
It’s the night before Christmas. You are a stirring mouse in an otherwise totally quiet house.

I crept out of my cozy cocoon that was made with fuzzy sweaters and lint. I headed to the small hole in the wall that led to the space with all the big climbing structures and the big green tree. I peeked out and looked carefully in both ways and crept out slowly. I stayed over to the side of the wall as I slowly went along.
I didn’t see the cat anywhere. Hopefully he was upstairs curled up and asleep on the old lady. I didn’t feel like getting into a chase tonight. I had enough drama happening with my family. This had to be a quick operation for food. We were running low on treats because, well, my sister happened.
I came to the end of the first brown fuzzy structure (that was sometimes fun to climb on) and put my nose past it and sniffed. Hmm, it seems safe.
I slowly peered out and could now see the big green tree. Ooh! There were bright shiny things on it. And under it too! Interesting. Must explore.
I looked both ways, took a deep breath, and scurried over there. The green tree was so tall. I couldn’t even see the top. But there were bright colored things hanging from the branches now. It didn’t smell like anything much from what I could tell. Must not be any food.
There were a few boxes under the tree. That was new. They were resting on a fuzzy red blanket that was quite soft. Could I take this blanket back to my bed? Probably not. I would have to bite off a section and I’m not sure how that would work. I carefully stepped onto the red fuzzy part and continued forward a few more steps.
Five new boxes, and they were very colorful. Two of the packages were green, one gold, and the last two were red and white. Two of them smelled very good. I stood up on two legs to get a better view and wiggled my nose.
I’m not sure if I can do this on my own. This looked like a longer project. I may have to go back and get help. I went back down on all fours and walked around the first green box.
“Woof!”
I jumped in fright. Was Jack downstairs? I didn’t smell him at all! I scurried back around the green box and tried to make myself very small in between two of the other boxes. There were clicking noises coming from the kitchen. Luckily, he wasn’t as vicious as the cat. He just tended to slobber over everything and never seemed interested in chasing after us.
“Woof! Woof-woof!”
I heard a door opening and Jack jumping around, panting. Oh, it must be the boy coming home.
“Shhhh, Jack!” The boy whispered quietly. “Don’t wake anybody up, please!”
He walked into the big room as Jack followed him jumping around his feet.
I watched carefully from my spot under the tree. I crouched down and looked for a good escape route if Jack decided to come investigate around these colorful boxes.
The boy sat down on the big brown structure. I had been able to climb up on it just a few times before. It was very comfortable. Jack settled into the back of the fuzzy things and patted his leg for Jack. Jack hopped up next to him and turned around three times and settled next to his leg.
The boy had a bag in his hands and he opened it and popped something into his mouth. I wiggled my nose and sniffed a few times. Peanuts!
Mmm, peanuts. Settling back down in-between the boxes, my shoulders slumped down and I felt my stomach growling menacingly. This might take awhile. Luckily, I could still see the boy and Jack sitting on the couch from my vantage point. Closing my eyes for a moment, I had to think of a new plan.
A few minutes passed by and I heard Jack stir. He slowly stood up and hopped down from the structure.
I tensed. Was he going to come over here? Which way should I run? I knew I could beat him if it came down to it. I could scurry under the brown structure and he definitely couldn’t fit. Then it was a short sprint to my hole in the wall.
Jack came around sniffing.
I squeaked in fright.
“Jack! Come back over here.” The boy ordered Jack back to the couch. Jack backed away sniffing.
I peered around the green box. Could the boy see me?
I think he could! He peered over at me and I could see his eyes shining. I tensed as he walked over closer to the tree.
He crouched down and put down a pile of peanuts and slowly backed away.
“Here you go, little guy.” He said gently. “Merry Christmas!”
