Oh, Rodrigo

I’m imagining you went down a back-alley street in the slums of Europe.

Some creepy guy walked up to you and said for $1,600 (inflation!) you could get a fake passport. You decided that was a good idea and went to a local ATM around the corner. You met back up… he took your picture. You had to quickly decide on a name before you gave him the money.

Rodrigo sounded like a winner. “He who teaches” with Spanish domination and characteristics of “will, intellect, and activity”.

You thought Portugal would be a wonderful place to get lost in so Rodrigo it was.

You hopped a plane with just your backpack, leaving all your other worldly goods behind. You wandered around and found Ferragudo, a small fishing village in the city of Lagoa, which felt like the universe calling you over.

A little studio was rented where the smell of the ocean breeze wafted in your windows in the evening hours. When sleep was hard, you wandered the streets at night. You started teaching English to the local children, living up to your “he who teaches” name. You started checker games on your back porch with some kids in your class but quickly moved to chess. The quieter kids always wandered over for a peaceful game with you and to listen to you lecture them about all your long-ago travels.

I hope you are enjoying Portugal, my friend.

Wishing you peace and light.
