Prompt: Relive

Describe something you wish you could relive

I was scrolling through journal prompts today wanting to take 15m to write. There were so many prompts that were interesting but this one caught my eye.

What popped into my mind immediately was the day we cruised with the dolphins.

It was a beautiful February day and we were on my step-dad’s boat for some reason. We usually didn’t need a reason but we were on it, the kids were there, and weren’t too thrilled. They had their iPads and were chilling inside on the couch as we cruised towards Catalina.

At 80 degrees, it was a traditionally warm day in Southern California. We were cruising out of Newport Beach Harbor and suddenly we were in the middle of at LEAST 150 dolphins. They were everywhere.

It was breathtaking to see them surfing with us around the wake of the boat. I don’t know what type of dolphins they were but they were slick and sleek, with brown and gray colors. They were jumping and dancing with us for 5 or 10 minutes at least. There were birds above us diving – I believe my step-dad said they were diving for albacore tuna. And I just remember the big smile on my face, the shock and awe of being able to be in this moment and share it with my kids on the boat. I vividly remember (because I have it on video!) saying THIS IS AMAZING! With my high-pitched voice squeaking out, looking so far around us at all the dolphins dancing with us.

Had to go get the video

The kids were amazed, they ran up to go look. The wind in my hair, the smell of the sea. I don’t remember it being particularly warm especially, I imagine, with the wind off the boat as we were going so fast but more of just the feeling of joy and amazement to be able to see such a sight out in the wild.

I often hear news reports about massive pods of dolphins swimming in the ocean, and it always reminds me of this moment.

It’s not so much the family that was with me, although I loved being able to share that moment with my kids and let them see it. Just the feeling of peace of being out in nature, freedom of the wind in our hair, and the power of the wild animals just in their element and being able to share in it.

I always find peace in sunsets, seeing the moon, and looking at shooting stars but there is absolutely a sense of wonder in seeing moments like these that are not something that happens in day-to-day life. It gave me an uplifting feeling and I loved being able to video it and share it with others.

I had posted it on Twitter and MSNBC called me and had Dara Brown interview me about the experience which was ALSO so thrilling. My 2 seconds of fame.

I would love to relive this moment of being on a boat with my kids. I almost wish I could relive hearing their adorable tiny voices speak but I’ll have to console myself with always being able to replay it on my video.
